More Like BADman Games

Perhaps I shouldn't be so glib about a serious topic, but come on, it was right there.

I was planning on doing a write-up of my group's experience with Tower of the Black Pearl, which we ran over two sessions (we have a slightly shorter time slot than many groups, I'm sure this would be a one-shot for most people). However with Goodman Games' recent announcement that they are working with Judges Guild again in order to release a new edition of City State of the Invincible Overlord, and their very weak justification for working with virulently bigoted people, I'm putting the DCC campaign at the very least on hold for the time being. I'm not going to restate the circumstances or link coverage -- if you're one of the three people reading this, odds are you know enough about the situation.

It is, of course, nearly impossible for one's purchases and choices of entertainment to be 100% ideologically pure. This is especially the case when we're talking RPGs, and especially the case when we're talking fantasy RPGs in the OSR/old school/retro subgenre. There's also the fact that I already own a bunch of DCC products via various bundles to consider -- I could, theoretically, continue a DCC campaign for years before running out of material. However, one of the things that drew me to DCC was the broader community, and Goodman Games is very much entrenched within that community. There's a very real possibility Emily and I may be moving to a new area sometime soon, and running Road Crew games seemed like a good way to meet new people, stay active playing RPGs, while also having access to a lot of support. Now it's hard not to see doing so as advertising for a company I find unscrupulous at best, in a way that feels different from running any other game whose creators/publishers/what-have-you are questionable folks. Similarly one of the things I was looking forward to about attending GenCon this year (already up in the air considering said potential move) was getting to experience Goodman Games' much acclaimed con games. So much for that.

On the plus side, I've got plenty of unplayed games to give a whirl. For the time being I plan to run a one-shot of something new with my group a couple weekends from now -- prrrrrobably Mausritter, but there are a few other things I'm considering. In any event, I'm sure I'll do a write-up of how that goes. If Goodman Games doesn't course correct in a satisfactory way by Memorial Day weekend I'll probably officially put the kibosh on the DCC campaign and pivot to something else.
